eBay Velocity Pricing: Reprice on Sales Speed, Not Just Competitor Price

eBay's Best Match algorithm rewards sell-through rate and watcher activity, not just the lowest price. This guide explains how velocity-based repricing adjusts price to how fast a listing is actually moving, and when to raise price instead of cutting it.

eBay’s Best Match algorithm doesn’t reward the lowest price on its own. It weighs sell-through rate, watcher counts, and how quickly a listing converts once it’s shown. A seller undercutting a rival by 50 cents can still lose placement to a listing that’s simply selling faster.

That’s the blind spot in copy-the-competitor repricing: it optimizes for a signal eBay only partially rewards, while ignoring the one it rewards most.

What velocity pricing actually measures

Velocity pricing reprices a SKU based on how fast it’s moving, not just what competitors charge. Multiply’s velocity pricing algorithm tracks sales pace against a target sell-through window you set, then adjusts price up when demand outpaces that target and down when a listing stalls.

The result is a price that responds to real demand signals such as views, watchers, and conversion rate, instead of chasing whichever competitor moved last.

When to raise price instead of cutting it

Most repricers only know how to go one direction: down. Velocity pricing works both ways.

If a listing is converting faster than your target rate, that’s a signal you’re underpriced relative to demand, not a signal to hold steady. Raising price on high-velocity SKUs protects margin without slowing sales meaningfully. Buyers who wanted the item at yesterday’s price are still willing to pay a little more today.

Combining velocity with other signals

Velocity pricing doesn’t replace competitor awareness, it adds a second dimension to it. A seller can still set hard price floors and ceilings, exclude unreliable competitors from the pricing logic, and factor in landed cost. Velocity just determines where inside that range the price should sit at any given moment.

For fast-moving inventory nearing end of season, or slow-moving stock you need to clear, this distinction matters more than which competitor is a few cents cheaper.

Setting it up

Connecting velocity pricing to an eBay account takes three inputs: your target sell-through window, your price floor and ceiling per SKU, and how aggressively you want price to respond to changes in sales pace. Multiply handles the rest: it tracks sales velocity in real time and adjusts price automatically within the bounds you set.

Move from static or competitor-only repricing to velocity-aware pricing and the effect shows up quickly: listings that can sell at a higher price find it within days, instead of sitting at the floor until someone reviews them by hand.
